How to play Table Tennis

Choose a round of Table Tennis and settle into its rules. Reach eleven points with a two-point lead. Use the example below to understand a decision. Begin with the solo vs computer mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

rally/service model, win-by-two and alternating deuce service.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Reach eleven points with a two-point lead. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Serve.
  2. Move the lower paddle under the ball.
  3. Hit after the bounce near your baseline.
  4. A missed return gives a point.

Controls

Pointer/paddle buttons; Hit / return; Space serves or hits. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

An early hit is rejected; wait while positioning the paddle. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

The ball-flight model is timing-based, not full tournament physics. Compare the situation with the worked example. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
